2000 Channel Resolution: 10x the standard in vertical resolution
Back to the Inner Circle

Historically, LiDAR resolution has been constrained by the number of lasers you can pack on a chip or how finely you can control a moving mirror.

But thanks to the telecommunications industry, which has been using wavelength-tunable lasers for years, Baraja Spectrum-Scan™ sensors can provide 2000 lines of discrete vertical resolution, or ‘channels’.

This means you get more points on more objects in a larger field-of-view at long-range, plus Baraja Spectrum-Scan™ technology gives you the ability to distribute your points wherever you need them.

This ‘on the fly’ distribution allows your perception stack to optimize incredible resolution for any scenario – whether that’s trucks, robotaxis, passenger vehicles, in mines or in ports – an endless variety of applications.

As our customers know, the more points you can put on an object the better chance your perception algorithm has of detecting and classifying what that object is. Higher resolution results in higher levels of detection and classification.

And 2000 lines of vertical resolution is unmatched in the market. With this, you can detect really specific things, for example, a small object such as a tire in your lane at 200m, or whether or not a pedestrian is pointing in one direction allowing you to make a stronger inference that they may be about to cross the street.

Better quality sensors are more reliable, more repeatable and allow you cover edge cases as you’re seeing a truer sense of the real world. High quality sensors have allowed our customers to decrease the complexity of their software, saving them money, and giving them the opportunity to grow and build faster.

Our resolution capability is a key driver of effective range.

Let’s have a look at how Baraja Spectrum-Scan™ technology is able to achieve 2000 points per vertical scan line and what that flexibility can offer different output options.

Scan Patterns

Let’s explore how the Baraja Spectrum-Scan™ LiDAR’s scan pattern can be adjusted to allow for flexibility to meet the needs of your perception software. Baraja Spectrum-Scan™ LiDAR’s vertical resolution can range from 2 to 2000 points across a vertical field-of-view of up to 30°, with an unmatched maximum angular resolution of 0.02° which is extremely challenging for other LiDARs to obtain.

Because of Baraja Spectrum-Scan™ technology’s inherent flexibility, the points in the vertical axis can be distributed evenly or unevenly depending on the needs of your perception software.

For example, you can achieve things like tracking more points on a moving horizon or adjusting the field-of-view based on vehicle speed or driving situation.

Importantly, the precision, accuracy and range-repeatability [0.9cm 1 sigma standard deviation of a 90% target at 50m] of every point is not degraded by any changes to frame rate or resolution, meaning you can confidently, reliably, and repeatedly detect and classify objects in the real world.

Output Options – where the rubber hits the road.

Baraja’s Spectrum-Scan™ sensors allow for inertia-less adjustment of when and how different points in space are sampled. By adjusting the sampling window, every point in the frame can have a different maximum range. If you can trade off range in some areas, such as the road directly in front of the vehicle, then the system can output more points and have a higher resolution.

Additionally, the refresh rate, or frame rate, of the sensor can be adjusted up to 40Hz to allow for faster updates in fast-moving applications where the vehicle or objects around it are moving at high speed. This is useful for applications in racing or in aircraft.

Higher frame rates are also useful for applications requiring high precision, such as ports, where even slow and small movements are critical to sense quickly.

The inherent configurability and flexibility mean the output can be optimized from frame to frame, street to street, city to city, vehicle to vehicle using the same hardware.

Consequently, investing in Baraja Spectrum-Scan™ technology results in ultimately saving on reduced software complexity, development effort and time-to-market.
